The first African American to become a U.S. federal judge was Thurgood Marshall. Appointed to the United States Court of Appeals in 1961, he later became the first African American Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court in 1967. Marshall was a key figure in the civil rights movement, famously arguing the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education, which played a crucial role in ending racial segregation in public schools.
