The fastest terrestrial animal is the cheetah. Renowned for its incredible speed and agility, the cheetah can reach speeds of up to 75 miles per hour (121 kilometers per hour) in short bursts covering distances up to 1,500 feet (460 meters). This cat's aerodynamic body, long legs, and specialized adaptations, such as large nasal passages for increased oxygen intake and a lightweight frame, contribute to its remarkable running ability. Cheetahs primarily hunt small to medium-sized ungulates, using their speed to chase down prey in open grasslands. However, they can only maintain their top speed for brief periods, making strategy and stealth as important as speed during hunts.
