The layer of the Earth's atmosphere that contains the ozone layer is the stratosphere. Located above the troposphere and below the mesosphere, the stratosphere extends from about 10 to 50 kilometers (6 to 31 miles) above the Earth's surface. The ozone layer, which is a region within the stratosphere, plays an essential role in protecting life on Earth by absorbing the majority of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
