The major peace treaty signed in 1783 that formally recognized American independence is the Treaty of Paris. Negotiated by American diplomats Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay, the treaty ended the American Revolutionary War and established the boundaries for the new United States. It recognized the sovereignty of the United States over the territory east of the Mississippi River, north of Florida, and south of Canada.
