Ancient Athens developed the system of democracy, which is often regarded as the world's first democracy. This system emerged during the 5th century BCE, allowing eligible citizens—free men born in Athens—to participate directly in decision-making through assemblies and councils. Citizens could vote on laws, policies, and even ostracize individuals deemed a threat to the state. Athenian democracy emphasized equal participation and collective deliberation, contrasting with later representative democracies. Although exclusive regarding women, slaves, and foreigners, this system laid the groundwork for democratic principles that have continued to influence political systems worldwide.
