The structure in the cell that serves as a site for protein folding and modification is the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). There are two types of ER: rough ER, which is studded with ribosomes and is primarily involved in synthesizing proteins; and smooth ER, which is involved in lipid synthesis and various metabolic processes. After synthesis, proteins undergo folding and post-translational modifications within the ER, ensuring they attain their functional forms before being transported to their final destinations.
